Spades Strategy & Tips
A practical strategy guide for Spades: bid your hand accurately, know when Nil is worth the risk, support your partner instead of overbidding them, and keep the bag count under control.
Play SpadesThe core idea
Count accurately, then play as a team
Almost every strong Spades habit comes down to two ideas: bid what your hand can genuinely support, and play every trick with your partner's bid in mind, not just your own hand. A team that beats its combined bid by exactly the right amount, hand after hand, wins far more matches than one chasing big individual scores.
- 01
Count before you bid
Add up your spades (each one is a likely trick, more so the higher it is), your aces, and any guarded kings or queens in the other suits. A suit you are void in, or hold only one card of, is a future trick once it has been led out. Bid the total, not a hopeful round number.
- 02
Save your Nil bids for genuinely weak hands
A single ace, an unguarded king, or more than two or three low spades is usually enough to sink a Nil bid — the table will actively try to feed you a trick. Bid Nil only when your hand truly has nothing that can win.
- 03
Protect a Nil partner
If your partner bid Nil, every trick you fail to take is a trick they might get stuck with. Take the lead when you reasonably can, and avoid leading a suit they cannot safely follow low in.
- 04
Do not lead spades just because you can
Once spades are broken, you are still giving up your trump control by leading them early. Hold your high spades until you need them to win a trick your side cannot take any other way.
- 05
Support your partner, do not outbid them
If your partner is already winning a trick, follow with your lowest legal card instead of a higher one — there is no point beating your own teammate.
- 06
Watch the bag count
Bags carry over between hands, and every tenth one costs your team 100 points. Sitting on eight or nine bags, it is often worth deliberately ducking a trick you could have won.
- 07
Think about what has already been played
By the middle of a hand you have seen most of a suit go by. Use that to judge whether your remaining cards in that suit are actually safe or actually winners — do not play purely off what is in your hand.
By stage of the hand
How your reads should shift
The habits above apply throughout, but what you can safely infer about the table changes as the hand plays out — see the bidding and rules section of the guide for the mechanics behind each.
Early in the hand
Lead low from a long side suit to feel out who holds what, and avoid committing your spades until you know whether spades are already broken.
Mid-hand
Track who is void in what. A partner or opponent void in a suit will trump the next time it is led — plan your leads around that.
Late in the hand
With only a few tricks left, count exactly what everyone likely holds. This is when a Nil bid is won or lost, and when your last high spades finally cash in.
